The skills to test out of each level at Westgate Cabana Club are listed below. Students are to be assessed for correct placement on the first day of lessons, and reassessed on the last.

Level 4 - Stroke Development

  • Develop rotary breathing
  • Standing front dive with streamline
  • Freestyle for 25 yards
  • Backstroke for 25 yards
  • Introduction to butterfly arms
  • Butterfly kick for width of pool
  • Breaststroke kick for width of pool
  • Open turn front and back
  • Tread water, 90 seconds
  • Swim underwater for width of pool

Level 6 - Swim Clinic: Stroke and Technique Analysis

  • Racing starts
  • IM order and turns​

Level 3 - Water Safety and Intermediate Technique

  • Bob in deep water to travel to safety 15 times (safety swimming)
  • Jump into deep water, unassisted
  • Dive from side of pool, sitting and kneeling
  • Front glide with push off and kicks, 2 body lengths
  • Back glide with push off and kicks, 2 body lengths
  • Swim width of pool, freestyle
  • Swim width of pool, backstroke
  • Introduction to breaststroke
  • Introduction to butterfly kick
  • Reverse direction while swimming, front and back
  • Tread water for 45 seconds
  • Hold breath under water for 10 seconds

Butterfly

  • Streamline with kicks
  • Head position and breathing patterns
  • Arms: efficient catch, good reach
  • Legs: kick ratio, feet together,body roll
  • Open turns and finishes, two hands
  • Pacing


Backstroke

  • Block start and streamline
  • Head position and breathing
  • Arm position: turnover speed and hand entry
  • Kicks: straight legs and tempo
  • Body rotation and turnover
  • Stroke count, flip turns, and finishes
  • Pacing​


Level 5 - Advanced Fundamentals of Swimming

  • Master rotary breathing
  • Freestyle for 50 yards
  • Backstroke for 50 yards
  • Breaststroke for 25 yards
  • Butterfly for 25 yards
  • Swim underwater for width of pool
  • Freestyle flip turn
  • Tread water for 3 minutes
  • Retrieve objects from deep end and clear ears

Level 2 - Introductions to the Fundamentals of Swimming

  • 10 bobs in medium water
  • Jump into shallow water, unassisted
  • Jump into deep water, assisted
  • Unsupported floating on front
  • Unsupported floating on back
  • Swim ½ width of pool to instructor
  • Front glide with kick
  • Back glide with kick
  • Submerge and retrieve objects from water
  • Explore deep water with support
  • Hold breath under water for 5 seconds
  • Introduction to safety swimming

Level 1 - Beginner Lessons

  • Fully submerge head and face for 3 seconds
  • Bubble blowing 5 times in a row
  • Supported floating on front
  • Supported floating on back
  • Supported front kicking
  • Supported back kicking
  • Submerged paddling to instructor, 5 strokes
  • Bounce up & down with head under, 10 times
  • Jump from side of pool with help
  • Climb out of water unassisted
  • Retrieve objects, at surface and on steps

Breaststroke

  • Streamline and pull down
  • Head position and breathing
  • Arms: efficient catch
  • Legs: legal kick with glide
  • Open turns and finishes, two hands 
  • Pacing
